To Alex’s shock, Leo wasn’t wearing either his white clerical collar or his cassock when he showed up. He was wearing a plain white button up. The same coat and slacks, and the same shoes—he still managed to carry the look of a priest.

“You changed clothes,” Alex said.

Leo looked down at his shirt, and then shrugged. “Yeah. Can I come in?”

“You don’t have to ask.” Alex took a step back from the door and let Leo in. Once the door was closed, he took Leo’s coat and hung it on the hook nearby.

“Sorry I’ve been out of touch,” Leo said.

Alex ushered him into the living room, but neither of them sat.

“That’s alright,” Alex sighed. “I needed a minute, too. What’s with the change? Did you…?”

Leo shook his head. “I haven’t withdrawn my application for deaconship. I just thought it might be, ah… I don’t know; easier? If I didn’t wear the uniform when I came by. After what I… you know. Last time.”

Alex waved a hand, dismissing it even though the sting was still there. “Don’t worry about it. It’s not that big a deal. I get it—you’re a believer. I’m not, so… what do I care if you think what we did was a sin?”

The wince that pinched Leo’s face made Alex regret bringing it up. Leo sighed, and looked around the room. He glanced at the couch, where Alex had sucked him off, and at the floor in front of here, where he’d been on his knees.

Alex’s cock stirred, but he ignored it. He didn’t actually know why Leo was here, he’d just accepted the request to get together. Maybe this was where Leo called it off.

“If I…” Leo’s voice stalled, and he closed his eyes for a moment before he could speak again. “Do you… love me, Alex?”

Alex raised both eyebrows. “Ah…”

With a groan, Leo shook his head. He rubbed the bridge of his nose with the thumb and forefinger of one hand. “Good Lord… that came out wrong. I just meant to ask… do you have feelings for me? More than just physical feelings? More than lust?”

That didn’t really make it easier to answer, though it was the same answer regardless. Alex rubbed his neck, worried about the motivation behind the question. “I mean… I like you, sure.”

Leo’s expression was so hopeful, so full of expectant need that Alex’s heart nearly broke.

Lying, though, or overstating how he felt, was the wrong thing to do just because he wanted to see Leo smile. “I mean to say,” he clarified, “that… I like being around you. I think you’re interesting, and… you see things in a way that I’m not sure I can but that I almost wish I wanted to. Does that make sense? This… faith thing that you have… it’s weird to me. Weird in a good way, maybe. And weird in a sort of disturbing way, too.”

“Disturbing?” Leo pressed. “How?”

“Leo, I never consider sex to be a sin,” Alex said. Speaking plainly seemed best. “I
